History of St. Clair
Located mid-island on St. Simons Island, Georgia, today’s St. Clair subdivision was created on land belonging to James Gould, who came to Georgia from Massachusetts in the late 1700s, and, a few years later, constructed the first lighthouse on the south end of the island, which went into service in 1810. He served as the first lighthouse keeper. The original lighthouse was destroyed during the Civil War, replaced in 1872 by the lighthouse of today that is so well known to visitors and residents.
Soon after the end of the War of 1812, Gould bought his first St. Simons property, a tract that included land purchased from the Commissioners of Confiscated Estates and acreage from the estate of Major Samuel Wright. The entire 900-acre plantation, known as St. Clair, or New St. Clair, lay across the center of the island from Black Banks River to Dunbar Creek. Most of the St. Clair property passed, over the years, into other hands. The St. Clair residential development and the Sea Palms Golf and Country Club were located on the acres that were once St. Clair Plantation.
Today, the St. Clair subdivision, known for its large lots and as the friendliest neighborhood on the island, was created in the 1960s with 165 home sites. Most homes are located on St. Clair Drive, a 1.3-mile circle with houses on both sides, on two through-streets, and on three cul de sacs. Some of the houses on the western side of the neighborhood are on marsh front lots, including some on deep water. A private lake on the eastern side of St. Clair Drive is maintained by the residents whose homes abut the lake.
The St. Clair Parkway, off Frederica Road, is the only ingress and egress to our neighborhood. We have minimal non-residential traffic within the neighborhood at any given time. St. Clair neighborhood roads are all county-maintained, except for the western portion of Dunbar Creek Road.
Walking the St. Clair Drive loop is a favorite pastime for all sorts of residents. There are also bike riders, runners of all levels, and tots in strollers, with parent pushers. If you are looking for a family-oriented atmosphere with minimal traffic and large, generous lots, come have a look at St. Clair.

Our voluntary Homeowners Association (SCHA) generates funds for Parkway upkeep, street lights, other visible improvements, and a website (stclairssi.com). The current annual dues are $125, payable in January of each year.
